Monday 06th August 2001: CCUIST Pirelli annual golf challenge, Friday 10th August 2001

The first Annual Carlisle & Cumbria United Independent Supporters Trust (CCUIST) Golf Challenge Trophy swings into action this Friday, 10th August at the Eden Golf Course, Carlisle. Kindly supported by Pirelli, long time supporters of Carlisle United and one of the City's largest employers, and the Eden Golf Course, who have generously donated their superb facilities for free, the event is set to be a roaring success with over twenty local businesses competing.

Illustrious players from Carlisle United's past will be attending the day, including:-

Ivor Broadis (CUFC 1946-49 & 1955-59): The youngest league club manager ever, aged 23 years, and famous for transferring himself to Sunderland for £18,000, a huge sum in 1949!

John Evans (CUFC 1964-66): A nippy forward and scorer of 18 goals in the Championship winning team of 64/65.

Peter McConnell (CUFC 1962-69): Uncompromising halfback who played 272 times for United.

Les O'Neill (CUFC 1972-77): Midfield dynamo of the most famous Blues side ever that graced the First Division.

Billy Rafferty (CUFC 1976-78): Scorer of perhaps the most famous United hat trick ever in the last 6 minutes of the game to beat Cardiff 4-3.

Ron Simpson (CUFC 1964-66): Forty-five appearances up front for United, integral part of the Championship winning team of 64/65.

Jim Terris (CUFC 1959-61): Fullback on 28 occasions for the Blues.

Ron Thompson (CUFC 1951-64): 'Ginger' holds the record for the most appearances for an outfield player for United with 374 appearances over 13 seasons.

Dick Young Jnr, son of CUFC's legendary coach and CCUIST committee member says, "It's wonderful to see so many former United stars helping to promote the event by taking part and demonstrating that, although their playing days may be over, they are still so committed to the Club they once represented so honourably and well. I'm sure that any spectators coming along will no doubt enjoy the opportunity of chatting with their ex-United heroes."

The aim of the Golf Challenge is to forge closer links between the area's businesses and CCUIST whilst raising funds for CCUISTs Share Fund which, in turn, will be used to purchase shares in Carlisle United FC.

Time Table:
12 noon First Tee Off. Photo / Filming / Interview Opportunity with Former Players at the Club House
7 pm Last Team Returns to Club House
8 pm Prize Giving Performed by John Nixon, Director & Works Manager of Pirelli Carlisle
