Thursday 17th January 2002: Hands up- goalkeeper trio among United legends backing Trust event

A FUND raising night for the Carlisle United Supporters' Trust (CCUIST) next month promises to be in safe hands. A trio of former United goalkeepers, including the legendary Jimmy Glass, are among the guests who have promised to turn out for the February 8 event to be staged at Harraby Catholic Club.
Glass, the man whose injury time goal against Plymouth Argyle saved United's league status, figured on last weekend's Channel 4 TV programme about the 100 greatest sporting moments. Also attending the CCUIST evening will be ex-keepers Joe Dean, who was with United in the 1960s, and Tom Clark who was, for several seasons, understudy to Allan Ross.

Popular show group Gize top the bill with supporting acts and some of Carlisle's most famous players from seasons gone by, including the legendary Hugh McIlmoyle, will be there. Other former stars who have said they will be giving their support to the Carlisle and Cumbria Supporters' Trust on the night include ex-skipper Peter McConnell, Johnnie Evans, George McVitie, Alex Brown, Tot Winstanley, John Halpin and Dave Wilson.

One of the organisers for the Trust, Kate Rowley, said: "It is great to see these former United stars still so keen to support the work of CCUIST. It's going to be a real trip down memory lane for many fans just seeing them all together like this and it promises to be a really entertaining evening."

She said: "There is a limit on tickets and we would advise any of our members who want to attend to move quickly because we expect them to sell out well in advance of the event." Tickets costing £5 each can be obtained from ex-United striker Billy Rafferty at Shapers in Cecil Street; the Cumbrian Newspapers office in Lowther Street; Solway Esso filling station, Caldewgate and Harraby Catholic Club.

With a membership now nearing the 1,000 mark, the Trust needs funds to maintain contact with its members. The main aim of the movement, which was set up last May, is to achieve meaningful supporter representation on the board of United under a change from the current ownership. The Trust has recently two supporters' marches at home games to call for a change of ownership and demonstrate the potential support for a successful team.
